John Wooden - More than just a coach

As you may have heard the legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden is in the hospital being treated for dehydration. Many that are close to him do not expect him to survive through the weekend. This is very sad news!! John Wooden is considered by many to be the greatest team coach ever but John Wooden is more than a coach. If you search his name you will find all of his accomplishments as a basketball player and coach but there is more to this man. He is a teacher of life. Just wanted to share of couple tidbits of Coach Wooden that many people might not know of him.

John Wooden has a seven point creed that he lives by and tries to teach to others. Its a creed that helps you to be a better person if followed. This seven point creed was taught to him by his father when he graduated from grammar school.

The seven point creed:

• Be true to yourself

• Make each day your masterpiece

• Help others

• Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible

• Make friendship a fine art

• Build a shelter against a rainy day

• Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day

Along with this seven point creed, Mr. Wooden also created the what is called "Pyramid of Success" which he made sure that all of his players learned along with the fundamentals of basketball. It was never about winning with Coach Wooden, it was about what you did after the game. Many of his former players still apply the pyramid of success in their lives. Also many large corporations in the world have adopted Coach Wooden's teachings in order to become more successful.(A link with be provided at the bottom so you can take a look at this great tool.)

Coach Wooden sets many examples that we can see and learn from. One example is his love for his wife Nellie. Nellie who passed away in March 21, 1985 and since then her death, for 25 years on the 21st of every month he writes her a love letter and visits her grave site. His devotion to his wife is unbreakable and shows how strong true love is.

Coach Wooden is also a man of many sayings. There are numerous quotes that he has come up with and can be found on the internet. Some of my favorites are:

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."

"Material possessions, winning scores, and great reputations are meaningless in the eyes of the Lord, because He knows what we really are and that is all that matters."

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

"Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability."

And probably is most famous quote:

"It's not so important who starts the game but who finishes it."

John Wooden does set a great example of how we should live our lives. You may not agreed with everything he did but I bet you could learn at least one thing new from him. This world will lose a great man if he does pass away but I know he's done his best to truly be the best human being he could be.
